JINJER - Pisces (Live Session) 7/8, 12/8

In Cyril Scott's book 'Music Its Secret Influence Throughout the Ages' he discusses the roll of dissonance and its esoteric use. He explains: "It is fact that intense and continued passional emotions especially mob-emotions, create a variety of thought-forms in the lower of the unseen planes, and that these thought-forms endure for a number of years, until destroyed by some specific agency." (p135)

Scott goes on to explain, "For it is an occult musical fact that discord (used in its moral sense) can alone be destroyed by discord, the reason for this being that the vibrations of intrinsically beautiful music are too rarefied to touch the comparatively coarse vibrations of all that pertains to a much lower plane. No more that a mass of slime in a stagnant pool can be affected by the blue haze of a summer's morn, can those turgid thought-forms be affected by the strains of purely concordant music." (p136)

All music has its place and purpose, and I can see that part of Jinjer's purpose is divine. Whether you, they or anyone else can see it, I do believe Jinjer is one of these specific agencies. A specific prescription is needed and they are one of the remedies, clearing up a certain matrix type of lurking dark energy. Can't put my finger on exactly what kind but, I can see the dense miasmic vapor moving in a swirl being lured by her voice, then shocked out of this reality. Most true purposes are hidden... anyways...

Jinjer is from the Ukraine and therefore by default have odd meter in their blood. This is one of my favorites from them which uses 7/8 in the verse, 12/8 chorus and various triple meters variations and 7/8 through out.

Obsessing 7 with Orange Goblin - Hot Magic, Red Planet

Here's a little 7 diddy tucked in some stoner metal from the UK. This is hard to find in this genre... perhaps they are too busy experimenting with the fuzz sounds. Of course I wish there were a whole lot more metric oddness in this realm, but this is a good example of the possibilities. In this song they use 7/8 in the pre-verse and 4/4 the rest of the song. This is a neat trick that some writers use to contrast sections. Since this genre likes to take us into other realms, why not into the numeric dimensions...

Obsessing 7 with the Don Ellis Orchestra - Beat Me Daddy, Seven to the Bar

Does it get any cooler than this... Experimental Ellis and his orchestra, performing boogie woogie in 7 with three bass players, two drummers a conga player, 5 trumpets, one quarter-tone trumpet, 8 more horns and a piano/organ player? Perhaps it does... ... but have yet to see. Mr. Ellis states that it is in 7/8 but I hear it as 7/4. But who am I to argue with the metric maestro. Anyways, this song really swings the 7, grooves that beat 7 to the bar.

Derek Sherinian - Oceana

Okay I am just gonna call this guy Derek Sevenian...

Well in case you don't know who this cat is (ehemmmm which I didn't until my frenchy oddmeterite, David Taugis clued me in on this), he is a elite rock pro keyboardist, that's played with so and so and you know who...

Hey and this is his 7th solo album... coincidence?

Check out the tracks..

5 Elements - yup you guessed it... 5/4
Mercury 7 - you are so smart... 7/8
Mulholland - 7/4, 15/8(I think)
Euphoria - 6/4, 4/4
Ghost Runner - (thought it was a Eye of the Tiger cover at first) 4/4
El Camino Diablo - 7/8, 4/4
I heard that - 4/4
Seven Sins - no not again... 7/8
Oceana - 4/4

If you really, really want to learn how to play in 7 - listen to this album, play/shred along, you won't be bored. This would make an extremely effective Music Minus One (instrumental karaoke) CD. The recording is pristine, lots of layers to be interested in as you are locking in the varying grooves and along with all melodic keyboards and guitar noodling the bass is loud and clear and most beautiful sounding.

Shred with Sevenian and you will be a ProInSeven.

Y'all like 7-8 eh?

And the winner is...
Yup, 7-8 it is... Is it that circular feeling you get when you play it or the skipped ahead to something better OCD feeling that gets ya? or maybe its because its July or you still have that Traci Lords song in your head... or something else totally different... oh do tell

Haha Thank you everyone for voting... and perhaps next time I will have a cool prize.

One of my favorite songs totally in 7/8 is titled "Good N Evil" on Traci Lords "1000 Fires" electronica CD. Here is a sample of the whole album and this oddness is located 1:00 - 1:27.

Cool CD cover eh?

Jeff Beck - A Blast From the East

What Jeff Beck playing odd meters? Just when I though he would never do a thing to win my heart, or get off my nerves, Gijs Verhijke, an astute odd meter listener, helped to change my disdain. He alerted me to a Beck oddmeterism 'Blast From the East' that he actually did not write (Tony Hymas did), but grooves it. Come to find out, he has some other ones too that go out of four, but that is for a different discussion.

This is what Gijs had to say:

"Spotted this one on his live DVD (live @ Ronnie Scott). If you ask me it's one bar of 7/8, two bars of 8/8 and then one bar of 7/8 again. Or you could argue that it's 15/8 alternatively but it clearly alternates between 7/8 and 8/8 if you ask me."

Well thank you Mr. Beck for chosing to playing this number, Tony Hymas for writing it, Jennifer Batten for cool effects and technique and the taken for granted rhythm section for making this groove appear to be easy to play.

But more importantly, thank you Gijs for spotting this one for us, I am grooving on it and I do believe you are totally correct on your 7/8 8/8 hypothosis.

Keep spottin' the odd ones for us,

Danish Pop in 7

Here’s something new for you,
(well it was new for me)
Perler fra Svin
(what? – Danish for Pearls from Swine)

I’m a sucker for any odd meter, so when the genre of Danish Pop was introduced, I immediately thought oh no sticky sweet (I prefer darkness). But when I had a listen to these fellows, I really enjoyed it. They have a great authenticity and originality about them, even though I don’t really know what they are saying. But, Jakob Johansen (gotta love that name), guitarist, song-writer whose project this kindly clued me in on the lyrical meanings.

Vaegelsind – 7/4 is about being fickle, unbalanced, wanting everything and not being able to choose.

Morgen med Sara – 7/4, 4/4 “Morning with Sara” about an ex-girly and longing for something you don’t know what it is or someone you don’t know who is or where to find.

I think that Jakob has reached his ambition of “making music that is rhythmically ambitious and lyrically profound while remaining easily accessible, melodic and catchy”. He lives in Denmark, studying journalism and has been writing pop tunes for the past 7 years. And as he told me that he discovered what a time signature was 5 years ago and since then has become more and more obsessed with odd meters. Now that’s my kind of musician. I look forward to his future odd creations (13/8 hint hint).

Have a listen – and of course they will be streaming on the Odd Time Obsessed broadcast.
